“I used to indoor tan in 2003-2004 and I ONLY used California Tan Beach Bum Rum Step 2. Now, come 2009, I chose to join a tanning salon again. I was aghast to find out no salon carried this product. I called 10 tanning salons in my area to find this product, and none carried this product. One tanning salon told me they didn’t carry it because it was on older product circa 2004-ish. Anyhow, I come to Amazon and here it is! Now, to the review..
I am very pale. I chose to start with Beach Bum Rum Step 2 vs. Step 1. I’ve never tried Step 1. Good decision starting with Step 2! This lotion does not turn me orange, it turned me a beautiful light brown color, and I’m getting darker brown each time I go to the salon and use this! The smell is heavenly, coconut-y and fruity. I think the price of this product is such a great value. The tanning salon was selling other products that cost up to $80. Nuh-uh, no way. I will stick with this lotion that is under $25 and turns my pale, almost translucent, white skin a beautiful tan/brown color. I did burn the first few times I went, given my pale skin, and I have never peeled from the burn. I attribute the no-peeling from the burn to the grape seed extract in this product. Any product I’ve ever used for my skin that has grape seed extract has always kept my skin soft. If you’re looking for a GREAT indoor tanning lotion for a great price, this is it! The bronzers are great, the smell is yummy, it spreads nicely over skin, the color it’s turning my pale skin is lovely, and you can’t beat the price! One last thing I will say that’s not a huge deal to me is this. I have noticed it can leave light stains near the underwire of my bra, but it washes out when I do laundry. It also can stain my fingernails, but also not a biggie to me. When I take a shower (which you should wait at least 2 hours to do after tanning) my fingernails no longer have the stain on them. “This product was recommended by the tanning salon I go to. It is one of their “cheaper” products (with a 20% discount it still comes to about $35–which is $15 more than what is advertised here). Since I am a beginning tanner (I usually go in the bed about 10-12 minutes at a time), I figured I would give it a try. It has a nice rum-coconut smell. It has sunless tanners (but no streaks or orange-color) which helps you see results right away–within the hour. It has a bit of golden glittery-shimmer and makes your skin feel soft. I haven’t tried any high end products. The only other things I have tried are Hempz, Lotion Potion and Tropicana’s tanning bed formula. I like this better than the other three. I have even used it pool-side since it makes my skin look so good. For the price–definitely can’t go wrong (unless you want something unscented).” – D. Adams
